Lyndon Johnson Biography - Senate Years
1948 was an incredible year for Johnson, as he ran for Senate a second time, and was successful after an intense and controversial race. The race for senate was lead by three main contenders, all of which were democratic. This was already a win for the many democratic supporters, an entity of which had increased dramatically since the investigation of the so called Democratic Republic of Germany.
The election was not originally won by Johnson, however by his competition Coke Stevenson. Unfortunately the election was considered far too close to determine a clear winner. Stephenson began to tire under the stress of campaigning harder for the position, and during the recount of votes, it was clear that Johnson was the new winner of senate by a small 87 votes.
This is where controversy started to follow Johnson around, as it has been commonly suggested by several authors regarding the issue, that Johnson rigged the election and others to follow. Stephenson too was accused of election fraud, and went to trial for the allegation. However, Johnson carried on and by November was elected Senator. Lyndon Johnson was considerably young compared to the other senators he was communicating with on a regular basis. However, due to his enigmatic and almost forceful way of completing a job on a new policy or platform, Johnson was highly regarded by his older colleagues.
In 1950 Johnson was inducted into the Armed Services Committee and in such a position endeavoured to begin the Preparedness Investigating Subcommittee in which Johnson was quickly appointed the chairman. The committee was involved primarily in the efficiency of the defense force in America, and the cost at which it would cost to train and extend the defense force.
In 1953, Johnson was voted by his colleagues as a minority leader within the Democrats. He was bestowed the honour along with the title of the youngest politician to do so. Johnson was reelected to the senate in 1954, the same year that the Democrats became a majority within the senate, and Johnson was elected the majority leader.
Due to his incredible efforts within gathering intelligence regarding the defense force, budgeting and investigating the efficiency of the defense force, and constantly striving to inform himself better on the situations regarding poverty within America, Johnson was quickly becoming an implausibly fast rising politician, and regarded as one of the most powerful and knowledgeable man within senate.
